Here we emphasize the health of our physical body. The focus is on movement, energy, nutrition, sleep, taking care of yourself in the physical form. This also included regular visits to your physician for screening tests. Habits and lifestyle changes are often focused on this area as it is the most outwardly expressed and easily visualized by others.
Spiritual wellness aims to work on the connection between you as an individual and the divine or a greater purpose, whatever that means to you. It is not recommending adherence to any certain belief system or religion, it is directed at nourishing the human soul and finding meaning and connections.
Here we direct attention to the importance and focus of mental health, managing stress, coping with the mental aspects of depression and anxiety. There is often much overlap with the spiritual or emotional category of wellness. This includes incorporating mindfulness, meditation, coping strategies for stress and overwhelm, techniques to conquer fears, etc.
Humans are generally social beings and we crave connection, being loved and loving others. Without strong social supports and feelings of connectedness to our communities we can lack fulfillment and peace in our lives. There is much overlap with emotional wellness in this category as they are closely linked.
Feeling satisfied in one's work is highly important for our well-being. This can look like contributions you make to society, if you feel you are leading people in work that matters to you, fulfilling a purpose you see need filled in the world, being challenged or creative. Making sure this area of your life is contributing to your well-being instead of subtracting from it is very important.
Financial health contributes a great deal to our overall wellbeing and health. Making sure we don't shy away from this but instead treat this like we would any other category of wellness and making sure it is given attention. This has little to do with the amount of money you have and more with how you relate to money, the importance of it in your life and if you are following a path that aligns with your values.
This is also an area where we focus on anxiety, depression, managing overwhelming feelings and knowing how to think clearly or function near our best when having uncomfortable or difficult feelings. Additionally, we want to make sure we allow ourselves to feel the full spectrum of emotions we were designed to experience and not shy away from certain feelings. Strengthening our emotional wellness can often include deepening our relationships and exploring the feelings we have surrounding how we relate to those around us.
This category is not included in every model of wellness. We highlight it here to make you aware it is a part of some models. We believe it can contribute greatly to the wellbeing of many and shouldn't necessarily be overlooked. This category focuses on planet friendly practices, engaging in activities and behavior choices that nurture the environment. Studies have shown those that spend more time outside, around green areas, have better health including lower blood pressure and self reported lower stress levels.
