Wellness as a buzzword in the mainstream media and collective psyche of society may be relatively new, at least as most of us in America understand it. The idea of focusing on the health of your mind, body, relationships, community, finances, work, environment, etc and making all those things part of your "health" or well-being can seem too trendy or new-age and certainly most visits to the doctor for your physical are not asking about your community connections. But consider that wellness, and the concept that the many different parts of your life are all deeply connected to how you function and feel going through this world, has been around for much longer than most of us realize and truly has ancient roots. Wellness and the practices that involve physical, mental, spiritual, communal, educational, etc concepts all coming together to help you achieve the highest version of yourself trace back to Ancient India with Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and practices in Ancient Rome and Greece.
Wellness as a concept is generally regarded as holistic, trying to dedicate focus and attention to all the parts of your life that make you who you are. The intention is to put you in a position to thrive, live fully and prevent sickness and disease, not just react and treat already existing problems. Most wellness institutes will have several tenets or core principles that make up the whole idea of your wellness. These will vary depending on the institution or organization but something to recognize universally is that they all demonstrate significance and importance to multiple categories that must overlap, function together and be well tended to in order for you to be well.
